Loctite anaerobic adhesive and sealants are some of our most used products and are available for a wide range of applications. Anaerobic adhesives work by completely filling gaps between components. They are typically used to augment the seal or holding force of a mechanically joined assembly.

Anaerobic adhesives remain liquid until isolated from oxygen in the presence of metal ions. Though anaerobic applications differ widely, in most cases the adhesive provides high shear strength and temperature resistance. Anaerobic adhesive compounds fixture in minutes at room temperature and fully cure within 24 hours. Full cure of anaerobics may be achieved more rapidly using short-term exposure to heat (e.g. 30 minutes at 120°C).

LOCTITE® anaerobic adhesives include threadlockers, thread sealants, retaining compounds, and gasket sealants.

What is Red Loctite threadlocker - High strength, permanent

Red Loctite threadlocker is considered to have high adhesion strength. It cannot be removed by simply applying torque but requires localised heat to approx. 250c in combination with torque to disassemble the components after the red Loctite threadlocker has been applied. Once applied to the threads it will cure in 24 hours. Examples: Loctite 262, Loctite 277 and Loctite 272.

 

Properties: High strength, permanent adhesion. 

 

Application: Choose for high vibration applications where the components don’t need to be disassembled 

What Is Green Loctite threadlocker - High strength wicking

Green Loctite threadlocker is considered to have high adhesion strength for wicking. It is ideal for preassembled fasteners, like set screws. It cannot be removed by simply applying torque but requires localised heat to approx. 250c in combination with torque (or special chemicals) to disassemble the components after the green Loctite threadlocker has been applied. It is available in a liquid form, and once applied to the threads it will cure in 24 hours.

 

Examples: Loctite 270, Loctite 2701, Loctite 2700, Loctite 276 and Loctite 290.

 

Properties: High strength wicking, permanent adhesion.

 

Applications: Choose for high vibration applications for preassembled fasteners that don’t need to be disassembled 

What is Blue Loctite threadlocker - Medium strength wicking

Blue Loctite threadlocker is considered to have medium adhesion strength. It can be disassembled with high torque, but it is easier to disassemble with special chemicals and/or heat. Once applied to the threads it will cure in 24 hours.

Examples: Loctite 242, Loctite 2400, Loctite 245 and Loctite 243

Properties: Medium strength wicking, permanent adhesion. 

 

Applications: Choose for high vibration applications for preassembled fasteners that don’t need to be disassembled

What is Purple Loctite threadlocker - Low strength removable

Purple Loctite threadlocker is considered to have low adhesion strength. It can be disassembled with low torque hand tools. It is available in a liquid form, and once applied to the threads it will cure in 24 hours. Example: Loctite 222.

Properties: Low strength, easily removable. 

 

Applications: Choose for non-crucial applications and if disassembling of the components is required

Threadlockers or Mechanical locking devices 

Mechanical locking devices (e.g., split washers, nylon nuts) were invented to solve the common problem of loosening that occurs in most threaded assemblies. Although they were made for this purpose, they have several shortcomings, such as can loosen under vibration, thermal expansion and/or improper torque and do non sealing threads. The benefits of LOCTITE® Threadlockers are numerous and include, locking nuts and bolts against vibration and thermal expansion, sealing against corrosion and leakage and acting as a thread lubricant with high chemical resistance. How does a LOCTITE® threadlocker work?

LOCTITE® threadlockers are single-component adhesives that cure in the absence of air and in contact with active metal to form a tough thermoset plastic. They completely fill all voids between the interfacing threads, which makes the assembly a unitized component and ultimately prevents loosening. Another property of LOCTITE® threadlockers is thread sealing. This property is especially important when assembling through-bolts in an oil reservoir or cooling jacket in order to keep the fluids sealed in and corrosion out. Examples of this application are common, but not limited, to gearboxes and internal combustion engines. 

When should I use a LOCTITE® primer?

LOCTITE® primers significantly speed up the cure time of LOCTITE® threadlockers when assembling metal parts that are cold, and have large gaps or deep threads. When assembling metal parts with inactive surfaces, LOCTITE® primers are recommended to ensure the proper performance of LOCTITE® threadlockers. Not required for primerless products.
